Atkinson Designs

The versatility of Terry’s latest patterns says it all! She is so diverse in her talents, whether it is bags, table runners, or sampler quilts, yet as soon as I saw the pics, I knew she designed them.

Letter ZIP! is a perfect example. The name is perfect, the pic draws you in, and the letters make you think of the first or last initial of every friend. After all, we want the cutest letters! And, of course, this is the perfect class to show how to insert those Atkinson zippers the easy way – Terry’s way

Terry’s designs always add that awe factor – just that little something that makes her designs stand out! In Simple Sack, she includes tabs on the sides so the bag will fit on the metal stands at the grocery. And, they collapse for easy storage.

Desert Stars includes two possibilities. Don’t you love the way the stars float into the border???

And then there is her Sampler quilt which includes the cover quilt along with nine projects that expand on the blocks featured in the quilt. The photography is amazing, showing step by step illustrations of many of the techniques explored in the blocks.

I have even heard that this project – which would be a great Block of the Month program for shops – features Creative Grids® rulers! It just gets better and better! Everything is due to arrive in May, just in time for shop hop season!

Prepping for Black Friday and Small Business Saturday

This blog has two different audiences – and today I am speaking to both!  Quilters – use this holiday season to support your local quilt shop.  Quilt shops who don’t sell machines are historically not as busy this time of year because most of you have already made your gifts and are busy cooking, cleaning, decorating – you get the picture!

How can we make this a win/win for everyone?  As a shop owner, take a minute to look at your shop through your customers’ eyes.  Set up vignettes that will interest everyone!

For those of us who have friends who want to learn to quilt, why not buy them a kit? For instance, the new Stripology Squared #GE-512, ruler by Creative Grids® #CGRGE2 is a perfect companion to the book.  Add a bundle of 10″ squares to complete the package.

Go through all of the books and patterns in your store and “kit” everything that is based on fat quarters and other pre-cuts.  If they require a specific tool or ruler, include that in the display.  And, if you have a sample of it, all the better.  Bringing that sample to the forefront may have everyone looking at it with fresh eyes!

One of my favorite families who quilt buy each other a “kit” each year.  They pick out a project that they know the other will love.  Everyone has a year to finish them – and bring the finished project to the get together the following year.  Past “kits” have included a baby quilt for the sister that was going to be a first time grandmother; a collection of musical fabrics for the piano teacher – you get the idea.  And what a great tradition!  As newbies marry into the family, they are asked to join the group  – and taught how to quilt!  Talk about paying it forward!

And for that beginner?  Have a display of rotary cutters, mats, and rulers as well.  Be sure to include lots of gift certificates so they can buy a beginning class to go to with their new tools.  Be sure to include some beginning patterns such as Yellow Brick Road and kits to go with them.

Have written copies of your class schedule that starts in January so they can give that as part of the gift!

Now, lets move onto stocking stuffers!  Go through all of your notions, buttons, and embellishments and make a display that is eye appealing!

Last but not least, tell your customers that you are ready for them!  Facebook is your friend!  My best idea?  Ask your customers to come in and fill out a wishlist.  Have them give you their spouses email.  Then, send their significant other an email with the items on the wishlist and prices.  Offer to get everything together and wrap it for them.  Be their one stop shop!!!  And don’t forget to ask them if they want to add a gift certificate to the order.  Believe me – they will be so thrilled they will actually be buying something that their partner wants, that they will be thanking you – and want to repeat this for other holidays!

Ready, set, go!  Wishing you all a great weekend!

Zip It!

Terry Atkinson and Joan Hawley have made zippers the new fashion statement – and the must see at Market.  Joan figured out a way to remove the start and stop from zippers – and then add the pull AFTER it is sewn into your project!  No more trying to sew around them!  This One-Zip technique works with polyester, all-purpose zippers by Atkinson Designs, Coats & Clark, Talon, and YKK.   (It does not work with invisible, metal, sport weight, or Sullivan brand zippers.)

Fobio

LGD137

Item #LGD137  Retail $13.50

This lanyard-style key fob pattern includes the hardware to complete two wrist size versions.  Clip to a pouch for an instant wristlet! Use the One-Zip technique to cut the zipper, sew one side of the zipper in straight and flat, bend to make loop, then use Joan’s trick to easily add one or more zipper pulls.  If you would like to make a true lanyard, do what Terry does – use two 22″ zippers sewn to create a 44″ length.

Since you are basically getting two zippers for the price of one, additional zipper pulls are available.  There are at least 30 per pack of assorted colors.  Combine your favorite colors for an additional design element.

The Savviest Designer for our Generation – Part One

Terry Atkinson just broke her own record!  She has EIGHT patterns in the Checker top 100 – including Yellow Brick Road, which arguably has to be the top selling pattern of all time!  This pattern was originally copyrighted in 2000 – and 15 years later, is still in the top 20.  This has been the first quilt – and their gateway to a love of quilting – for an entire generation of quilters as well as the go to quilt for experienced quilters.

ATK126

What is not to love?????

ATK129

Atkinson Designs – And Then There are Quilts – Part Two

Then there are quilts!   I love these quilts – and even better – so does my daughter!  Terry designs projects that appeal to both audiences without forcing either one of us outside of our comfort zones.

Stash Stars

This quilt incorporates a technique that makes this the perfect beginner quilt.  The flying geese star points “float” – so all of them are perfect.  The blocks are all trimmed to 10 1/2″ after they are sewn.  As long as the seam allowances are consistent, the quilter will be successful – and come back for more!!!

Item #ATK174  Retail $9.50

The blocks are all trimmed to 10 1/2″ – simple with the Creative Grids 10 1/2″ square.

Item #CGR10  Retail $19.95

Morning Noon & Night

You have to love the name as well….I want to make this one in king size.  Look closely and you’ll see that it gives you the feel of a bargello quilt – but the seams don’t match from row to row.  There are two different layouts for this quilt – but Terry says the block is the same!  I can’t wait to get the pattern because I can’t figure out what the block is!!!!

Item #ATK173  Retail $9.50

These blocks are trimmed to 12 1/2″, so once again it is the perfect beginning quilt – but everyone will love it!

Item #CGR12  Retail $23.95

Hexie Garden

Hexies are everywhere – but this one has it’s own sense of style!  Terry uses the EZ International #882670181A which cuts hexagons in sizes from 1 1/2″ – 5 1/2″.  She also uses a 60 degree angle – and since we are the home of Creative Grids, the CGRT60 is our ruler of choice!

Item #ATK172  Retail $9.50

Merry-Go-Round

But when just a little splash of color is needed – especially for a round table – why not make this simple table runner.  The instructions show how to cut the hexies with a 60 degree ruler (CGRT60) – yes, another teaching opportunity or demo.  It is easy to kit – four fat quarters are all you need for the hexies, binding AND backing!

Item #ATK169  Retail $6.50

These will be arriving any day so place your orders NOW to make sure that you get yours from the first order!  Be a good “scout” and be prepared!  You know they are going to be hot so order all of the companions as well.  Your customers will be glad you did!!
