Snuggle Up in Extra Wide Cuddle

I absolutely LOVE Cuddle and the luxurious feel that it gives to my quilts.  What is not to love????  It has a nap that feels like velvet and wears beautifully.  And, if you are learning to machine quilt, it hides all of those rookie mistakes!

They have just introduced a 90″ wide version in eight of their top selling colors!  At around $20 a yard, it is cheaper than piecing a back with standard 40″ wide cottons!  I’m hooked!

These are due in next month – but can be pre-ordered now.  Just click on the blue item number to take you directly to our website!

If you are using a longarm machine, roll the selvedge ends.  There is no stretch parallel to the selvedge so the backing won’t be distorted when clamping.

If you are using a domestic machine, use a basting spray.

No matter how you quilt it, I prefer using a cotton batting.  In fact, I have talked to several machine quilters who will not quilt it without a batting so be sure to ask!

These fabrics would be a great showcase product for upcoming events!  Order now to be the first to have it available – you may want to order multiples since it comes on 10 yard bolts!

Backings to Finish All of Those UFO’s

Let’s face it – every quilter wants to finish the projects in their sewing room before they want to start something new!  Your greatest competitor is not the closest quilt shop – it is your customer’s stash!  They need to use it up – or at least a portion of it – before they can start a new project – guilt free!

But a quilt isn’t finished until it is backed – so make sure you have plenty of backings on hand!  And, if you already have chosen projects for your classes this quarter, why not choose backings that will work for them as well.  Then, there is no risk!

Your customers want to finish these projects NOW – but don’t worry!  If you don’t have a lot of backings in stock, Checker does!

We have 163 wide backings in stock!  This floral by Windham is just one example of what is available right now!

My preferred backing for throws is 60″ wide fabrics such as Cuddle.  We currently have 180 bolts of Cuddle in stock:  //www.checkerdist.com/products/fabrics/?f_link=available&page=1&f_c=34203!  This red paisley cuddle would also be a great addition to a Valentine display….

I also love to use fleece – it is 60″ wide and double napped so it does not require a batting!  It is the most inexpensive batting/binding available and is practically indestructible!  It is my first choice for kid’s quilts – especially those going to college!  Check out the in stock choices:  //www.checkerdist.com/products/fabrics/?f_link=available&page=1&f_c=34411

This paw print version by Camelot is great for so many quilts.  A paw print can work for many school mascots – most of them are critters!

Many of you have fat quarter sales this time of year – or your customers already have quite a collection.  Why not show them how to piece them together to make a backing with some pizzazz!  As a rule of thumb, follow the chart below:

King — 30 fat quarters pieced 5 x 6 (100″ x 105″)

Queen – 25 fat quarters pieced 5 x 5 (90″ x 100″)

Double – 20 fat quarters pieced 5 x 4 (80″ x 90″)

Twin – 15 fat quarters  pieced 5 X 3 (60″ x 90″)

Throw or Baby – 12 fat quarters pieced 3 x 3 (60″ – 54″)

Post this chart by your fat quarter selection and ask your customers to bring in their stash and match what they already have!  This is a win/win for everyone!

You and your customers love these fabrics – now come to the Open House and learn the tricks that make sewing these fabrics a piece of cake!

Machine Quilting on a Longaram Machine

They are actually very easy to machine quilt if you know the basics.

These fabrics are all 60″ wide so they are great backings for throws.  The fabric stretches from selvage to selvage but doesn’t stretch at all parallel to the selvage.  So to machine quilt these fabrics, pin the selvages to the bars so that you can control the stretch.  Simply don’t put tension on the fabric.

This is a polyester fabric so it does not shrink.  Therefore, if you have not pre-shrunk the cotton fabric and batting quilted to this backing, they will shrink slightly when washed – and the backing will not.  This doesn’t bother me at all – in fact, I think it adds interest and texture to the quilt so I never pre-wash.

Machine Quilting on a Domestic Machine

If you would like to machine quilt on a domestic machine, use a basting spray such as 505.  This will stabilize the stretch.  Be sure to support the quilt while machine piecing – that helps too!

Item #505  Retail $12.99

Use a 90 Stretch needle.

Item #1713  Retail $4.99

Appliques

This product does not fray so you can use it for three dimensional appliques without turning the outside edges.  This is easy if you stabilize the fabric with a product such as Easy Knit (EK130PWHT).  That stops the fabric from stretching or curling when appliqueing it in place.

Combining Cuddle with other Fabrics

Tactile quilts are all the rage.  They add a shabby chic look to an adult decor and provide endless entertainment to the younger set.  You can either stabilize the entire fabric with Easy Knit and cut it up or use one of my favorite products – Heat Press Batting Together.

Item #HP1574  Retail $7.99

It comes on a 15 yard roll and is 1 1/2″ wide.  I draw the cutting lines on the wrong side of the fabric and press this tape over the lines.  Then when I cut it, the edges are entirely stable and there is absolutely no stretch!  You can use this product to sew together the strips in kits as well.  I butted the strips next to each other on my ironing board – wrong side up – and pressed this on both.  Then I folded the strips right sides together and sewed.  There was absolutely no distortion or stretch!  The fabric is stabilized 3/4″ on each strip.  I sew with 1/2″ seams because of the thickness of the fabric so this is perfect.

If you are sewing pillow cases and backings together, this works beautifully!

Just remember – use a light touch when pressing.  Many of these designs are heat embossed so aggressive pressing can remove the design.  And, these fabrics have a nap so you sew it like you would velvet or corduroy.  Piece it so the fabric nap is going in the same direction.

When I lectured at a recent quilt show on this product, it was standing room only!  Your customers want it, they just don’t know how to use it.  That is where you come in.  Offer a class or lecture, teaching them the basics, and you won’t be able to keep it in stock!

Come to the Open House and see the entire collection.  Talk to the folks from Shannon Fabrics, who have created the next big profit center for your store!
