Hexies Hit the Open House

Hexies are everywhere – in every size!  They are so popular that there was a display of these quilts featuring the Hexagon Trim Tool at the Open House.

CGRJAW4

Item #CGRJAW4  Retail $24.95

Turtle Time

I love this quilt!  The turtle shells are made by using the log cabin style markings on the Hexie Trim Tool to create a spiral effect.  The feet and head are turned so they are three dimensional!  No mother/grandmother is going to be able to resist this one!  Display this one with all of your brights!

CLPJSC001

Item #CLPJSC001

Many of these hexies are on steroids – which means they can be pieced quickly!

Hexie Flip

This quilt features half hexies that are sewn together base to base instead of across the center to create a totally different look.  Since they are half hexies, there are no inset seams.  The half-hexies are sewn in rows so adjusting the size is simple.  There are no borders so the outside edge is a series of angles.  And, yes, the pattern explains how to bind that as well.

NN347

Item #NN347  Retail $9.00

Cut the Cake Hexie

The hexies in this quilt are cut from 10″ squares – and then set with 60 degree triangles (CGRT60).  The star effect is stunning.

CLPJAW019

Item #CLPJAW019

Hexie Blossoms

Terri of Whimsicals pieces hexies with units cut with the Creative Grids 15 degree ruler (CGREU1) – and then sets them together with 60 degree angles (CGRT60).  It reminds me of beach umbrellas!

WH171

Item #WH171  Retail $10.00

But hexies aren’t reserved for quilts!  Check out this tote bag that is done in two different sizes.

CLPSMA003

Item #CLPSMA003

Our grandmothers would have loved this!

Sunshine and Shadows

One of the busiest booths at the Open House was the Lumi booth!  Dyeing has come a long way, baby.  As a child of the 70’s, I have done my share of tie-dyeing.  It was messy and it was always a surprise – you never knew what the finished product would be.

Lumi has made the process fun and accessible to everyone!  You can buy everything individually, but the kits are a great way to begin.  You can try each process knowing all of the supplies required are at your fingertips – even a video to walk you through the process.

Shadow Printing Kit

The Shadow Printing Kit is perfect for beginners as well as children.  The canvas pouch is included.

The dyes are clear until they are exposed to the sun.  The individual foil dye packs fold in half to release a squeegie – so applying the dye is easier than ever.  No mess, no fuss!  They come in nine different colors.

small_INKO-SP-MAG_01_01

Item #INKO-SP-MAG  Retail $3.99

Why not offer a series of classes?  It can’t get any easier than this – sell the kits with everything included.  Your customers will love it.

Remember the Joy of Osnaburg

I found the most interesting fabric on an end cap at the Open House!

Texture has become a design element in every aspect of quilting.  Cuddle has become a favorite backing.  Wool is the preferred fabric for applique.  And, now, osnaburg is back. These hand-dyed versions by Fiber on a Whim are beautiful.  The dyeing process shrinks the fabric and gives it the look of linen.

They are available individually as fat quarters in a variety of colors:

Learn about Batting from the Best

Let’s face it.  Even though batting is in every quilt, quilters know little about battings.  Most of us stick with the same batting, buy what’s on sale, or let our machine quilter choose.  What if we could educate our customers and help them choose the RIGHT batting for their projects?

Dawn from The Warm Company will be at the Checker Open House.  I have quilted long enough to remember when they came out with “Warm and Natural” – a batting that could be washed and maintain its shape.  This also meant that it could be quilted up to nine inches apart without FALLING apart!  This product was revolutionary but they didn’t stop there.  Let Dawn help you choose which battings you should carry in your store – and explain when specialty battings are a good choice.

A Machine that Cuts like a Printer

Confused?  I was too.  This machine hooks up to your computer and cuts the shapes on your screen.  But before you cut, you can manipulate the image in a multitude of ways – change the size, elongate a shape, separate layers – you name it!

Then, with a simple click, you can print multiples with no waste of fabric.  The grid on the computer screen matches the grid on the mat that runs through the machine so every scrap can be used.

SIL-CAMBNDL

The quilting package includes the electronic cutting tool, the software, over 50 preloaded designs, a 12″ cutting mat, cutting blade, a free month with access to the Online Library, a hook, a scraper, a spatula, a pick me up blade, and a fabric blade.

The pre-cut fabric appliques that are on the market?  Now you can cut your own at a fraction of the cost!  But this machine can do so much more!  There are packages available that give you an opportunity to expand the machine’s potential.

Temporary Tattoos

SIL-TATTOO

Item #SIL-TATTOO  Retail $10.00

Turn any image on your computer into a temporary tattoo.  Talk about being the best Grandma ever!!!  The party potential is enormous!  But think about the potential:  Turn your company logo into a tattoo and hand them out at shows.  Tattoo students for a field trip, use different tattoos to decide teams – you get the idea.  Teachers will love this!

Glass Etching

Frankly, I have no idea how this works – but can’t wait to try it.  Can you imagine etching names on champagne flutes for wedding gifts?  Wine glasses for showers and bachelorette parties?  Your customers will love it too…

small_KIT-GLASS_01_01

Item #KIT-GLASS  Retail $39.99

Rhinestones are everywhere – and this machine makes it possible to add sparkle to everything, anywhere.

KIT-RHINE

Item #KIT-RHINO  Retail $39.99

Why Everyone Needs Terial Magic

This is one of those products that has taken on a life of its own!  Once quilters got their hands on it, they discovered its versatility – and it has been flying off the shelves ever since!

small_TM11001_01_01

Item #TM1101  Retail $14.95 (24 oz.)

Item #TM11003  Retail $59.99 (Gallon)

A gallon treats approximately 20 – 24 yards of fabric.  Consider it a “super starch”.  When treated, the fabric holds its shape.  It stabilizes the fabric so fusibles are no longer necessary.  The treated fabric has additional body so appliques maintain their shapes and don’t fray.  Place with a dab of glue and stitch in place.  Terial Arts washes out so there is no bulk or stiffness usually associated with stabilizers!  Is that cool, or what!

I just got a Silhouette machine.  By treating the fabric before running it through the machine, the fabric cuts are perfect with no fraying – and they release easily from the cutting mat. Machine Embroider the shapes with no puckering or stiffness!

Want to create quilt labels on matching fabric?  Treat the fabric and run it through an ink jet printer.

My favorite use???  When creating story boards out of fabric, the step by steps are perfect and maintain their shape.  And, once again – NO FRAYING!  Unbelievable!

But for art quilters, this fabric can be manipulated into amazing shapes to create beautiful flowers!  Here is just a sampling:
