Crazy Trees

I love this!  In fact, I love this so much that I am teaching it this weekend!

This is a Karla Alexander design – and is SO her! A little wacky, a little wonky, and a whole lot of fun! This combines every aspect of a great pattern:

  • It looks hard but is so easy and so forgiving – anyone can do it!
  • It takes just eight 10 inch squares and eight 11″ x 14″ rectangles of background so it is easy to kit.
  • It makes a great demo.
  • AND, it is a Cut Loose Press™ pattern so it is affordable. Crazy Christmas Trees #CLPKAL009

It uses her ruler. Creative Grids® Spider Web Quilt Ruler #CGRKA6

Saturday I am making this in Fall colors – but kitting it for Christmas as well. After all, who can stop at just one! An added bonus? This runner is 17 1/2″ x 40 1/2″ so if I make four of these, I have a great throw!

Ovals ARE Easy

Add Karla Alexander’s sense of style and color sense – and classes will sell out immediately!  I am one of those people who came from an applique background so sewing curves on a machine wasn’t a part of my skill set until now!  Look how gorgeous…

These are Cut Loose Press™ patterns that are stunning. Leaves is a perfect class. They can actually finish this in an afternoon. Then demo the Clam shell quilt and Capiz Lanterns. The lantern quilt would be a perfect Christmas quilt.

Enchanted will have everyone anticipating the holiday seasons. Trading Places and Spin Cycle actually make me think I could make art quilts – and you could too!

You need to challenge yourself to step outside of your comfort zone – and I guarantee you will be successful and love every minute of it!

Ovals All Ways – Literally

Finally!  A tool that cuts ovals!  No more elongated half circle hot dog shapes!  The Creative Grids® Ovals All Ways Ruler designed by Karla Alexander, cuts ovals, semi-ovals, and quarter-ovals from 3″ x 4 ½” to 8 ½” x 10″ and every half-inch between. Since this ruler is designed to be used in multiple ways, additional markings are included for techniques such as fusible applique, piecing and turned-edge applique.

If only my laundry looked so good!  Spin Cycle showcases a variety of ways to use this ruler. And don’t you just love the color combinations?  Trading Places uses the positive and negative space to create even more interesting patterns.  And then there is Enchanted!  Jasmine would have been proud to fly on this magic carpet!

And since they are ovals, they are even easier to piece than circles.  Watch the video for even more inspiration!  Why not teach a class on ovals and ease them into the Circle Savvy?  But with all of these possibilities, they will want to stay and play for awhile!

Quilts with Funk

I love it when one of our babies – in this case the Creative Grids Circle Savvy ruler – takes on a life of its own.  When the designers came to us, we were blown away by the possibilities.  But, in this case, once they had a chance to play with it, the true potential of this tool emerged!  Karla Alexander of Saginaw St Quilts has a vision and a style that has become instantly recognizable.

My circles never looked like this!!!!

Who would have thought that both quilts were made with the same tool????

cgrsav1

These quilts are much easier than you think!  Piecing large curves is a piece of cake – especially when you have the right tools and patterns!  Moon Shadow and Polka Box have a more traditional look – and may be the perfect transition class to move your customers toward more artsy, free form quilts.

Why not challenge your students in the new year – and offer classes that will challenge them to try techniques that they may not be comfortable with.  For our industry to continue to grow, we must continue to learn!  And these quilts appeal to everyone – and bridge the gap between tradition and art!

Cut and Sew those Scraps FAST

I flat out LOVE this ruler!  It has become my favorite go to scrap ruler.  I;m telling you right now, be careful or it will suck you right in!  This little beauty is called The Straight Out of Line ruler.

CGRKA3

Item #CGRKA3  Retail $19.45

In its simplest form, place a stack of fabric squares – right sides up – under the appropriate markings on the template up to ten inches.  Then cut the angle. Piece these units together to create a rectangle.  Trim them all up to the same size size.  Since the angled seam doesn’t have to match anything, it is very forgiving – and is the perfect beginning quilt.

In Twirl, Karla sews four of these units together to create the block.  And guess what – nothing has to match except the center seam – which is a right angle!  And since all of the blocks are trimmed to the same size, it goes together perfectly – and the outside edges of the block are on the straight of grain!

CLPKAL002

Item #CLPKAL002

In Against the Rail, she adds a strip of bright red to the blocks – wow!  Again, see how the angled seams add movement but nothing has to match?

CLPKAL001

Item #CLPKAL001

In Zig, she set the blocks on point for a totally different look!  What a fast and easy baby quilt, beach quilt, graduation quilt…..you get the picture!

Item #SSQ426  Retail $9.00

In Old Glory, she pieces them in rows.  Any fireworks in your future?

SSQ500

Item #SSQ500  Retail $5.00

And in Vice Versa she plays with color placement and vertical stripes.

SSQ502

Item #SSQ502  Retail $5.00

Look what happens when you cut the squares both vertically AND horizontally – and piece wonky four-patches.  The centers are still right angles so they are a piece of cake!

Whirlwind is created with these wonky four-patches and look how the border is a continuation of the blocks achieved by color placement!

SSQ420

Item #SSQ420  Retail $9.00

Chain Reaction is pieced with the same four-patches but once again, color placement creates a masterpiece!

SSQ421

Item #SSQ421  Retail $9.00

Chains that Bind combine these blocks with solid squares to create a fast and easy version of a Double Irish Chain.

SSQ427

Item #SSQ427  Retail $9.00

This Churn Dash combines half-square triangles with these four-patches.  Once again, look at her color placement!

Item #SSQ431  Retail $9.00

Cut the squares a different way and you can create these beauties:

Fresh Cut creates movement – and once again the block continues into the border…

SSQ401

Item #SSQ401  Retail $9.00

Window View takes these same blocks and separates them so they stand alone in their own narrow window pane:

SSQ408

Item #SSQ408  Retail $9.00

Seriously – would you have thought that all of these quilts were made with the same tool – that sells for under $20.00????  This tool is a true stashbuster!  The quilts go together so quickly that your scraps can be keeping someone warm before the next snowfall – and here, that is coming next week!

Expanded Videos for Creative Grids Part Two

At Spring Market, Karla showed me how easy it is to use this ruler – and I fell in love!  Cutting the units from squares guarantee that the outside edge will be on the straight of grain – no bias edges.  Then square them up and everything fits perfectly together!  A perfect beginning project that will take their breath away!

Spider Webs have Come of Age

Spider Web quilts have been around since quilters had scraps – but this generation of spiders are simply stunning.  Karla Alexander has done it again!  She has designed the perfect Creative Grids tool to make these striking quilts welcome additions to your bucket list.

This banner – from the Creative Grids USA website – celebrates the release this week of our latest addition.  (If you would like to use any of these banners, just right click on them and save or copy them into your blog or newsletter- we would love for you to help spread the word!)

Usually, at this point I would feature the tool – but in this case, the quilts are so stunning they are getting first billing!

Marco Polo

Don’t you just love the name – and the way the pattern blends into the background?  Karla’s color choices are amazing!

Item #SSQ423  Retail $9.50

Now for the tool that makes it all possible…..

Item #CGRKA6  Retail $20.95

The 45 degree kaleidoscope segments can be cut from one end.  The kite shapes are cut from the other end by placing the corner of a square on the white lines.  The markings in the center even tell you which size to cut these squares!  No charts needed!  Told you she was one smart cookie!!!

To get your customers started, Karla has designed a Cut Loose Press pattern which can be the showcase of a great demo…

Item #CLPKAL003

Vertigo was created with a Paula Nadelstern fabric which gives it that wonderful kaleidoscope effect.

Karla will be sharing these quilts in a school house, Take and Teach session, and demonstrating in the Checker Booth at Spring Quilt Market.  Stop by and see these quilts in person and learn how to use the ruler.  You will be glad you did!

Everything will be in stock this week so let your customers know that you have it BEFORE they see it on Facebook!!!
