The Mill Girls and their History
Jul 2nd, 2012 by Penny Haren
This book features the history of the mills in New England before the Civil War. Â At that time, they need workers in the mills and couldn’t get a qualified work force. Â The mills recruited women from the ages of 15 – 25 to move to town and live in dorms. Â The stories of their lives is a fascinating read.

The quilts that these stories inspired are absolutely beautiful! Â The cover quilt would be a great block of the month program for any shop. Â The center applique is surrounded by nine different pieced blocks as well as pieced borders.
There are eight other projects that are equally attractive. Â I love this center applique which is surrounded by my favorite eight-pointed stars.
This applique quilts has that awe factor. Â The sashings are striking!
This pieced quilt combined three different star patterns for dramatic effect.
This book definitely meets my rule of four – if I love four projects, I buy the book. Â And, in this case, you get to read about the history of the textile mills – a history that I never knew existed!
