Karla’s Curves with Creative Grids
May 23rd, 2011 by Penny Haren
Frankly, when I first met Karla Alexander, I thought she was this artsy quilter from the West coast!!! Â She mountain bikes, runs marathons – and the final nail in the coffin???? Â She sews curves, for God’s sake – and thinks it’s fun!!!! Â Not only that, she thought I would think that was fun too!!!
Did she not know that I was raised in the Midwest, that I loved Civil War reproductions, and developed new ways to do traditional blocks – in other words, “death by country”! Â Two people couldn’t have more opposite tastes!!!
Then, I HAD to use her rulers – it was literally part of my job. Â So I went to my studio – kicking and screaming – to sew my first curve since my beginning quilting class!!! Â And, I sewed my first curves, SUCCESSFULLY, with only three pins….I picked up the phone and told Karla she was a genius!!!!
She has designed five rulers with Creative Grids that include a “sweet spot”! Â This sweet spot – placed on a curve is a straight spot that guarantees that all of your seams match. Â She is, simply brilliant! Â Who knew that a fellow math geek could be wrapped in Batiks???
Her newest addition – Split Seconds – is a demo waiting to happen! Â She also designed four quilts around it – and a book coming out with Martingale will have a few more….We are working on the instructions right now – so it won’t be available to ship for a few weeks, but I know you are looking for shop hop demos and summer classes. Â Keep this one in mind!

Giant Rail Waves
This quilt provides a great opportunity to show how to use this ruler in a multitude of ways. Â Piece the curves and curved four-patches for the background – and then add the raw edge appliques. Â A picture just doesn’t do this quilt justice!
