How to Get Your Books First
Dec 7th, 2009 by Penny Haren
Ladies, we have a problem! Â I wrote an article on how to teach a class based on the Farmer’s Wife book – and you loved the idea. Â That’s the good news. Â The BAD news is that when we called the publisher to up our order so that we could supply those books, we found out that they are sold out! Â I have a call in to our sales rep there and he is checking on when this book will be reprinted – and available for you. Â As soon as we have a date, we will let you know.

How did this happen – and how can you insure that this will not create problems for you in the future? Â Most quilt shops order one of a book when it first comes out – and then order multiples when they decide to teach it as a class or showcase it. Â Therefore, the initial order the publisher received was about 1/12 of the re-orders! Â That is impossible to predict – and since this book has a C.D., and is printed overseas there is a two to three month lag time for reprinting! Â Hence the problem.
Make this lag time work for you! Â Some of you are “no back order” customers. Â That means that if you order something – and it is not in stock that day – you will not get it. Â In the case of books, in most cases they are entered in our system months before they are printed. Â I am finishing writing my fourth book this week, for instance. Â It was entered in our system when the cover quilt was done for Fall Market – but it won’t be shipped until March.

The publishers order a print run based on the initial pre-orders.  And, by pre-ordering this book, you can guarantee that you will get a book from the first run.  THEN, as soon as you get that book and have a chance to share it with your staff and customers, you can re-order immediately.  That optimizes your chances of getting all of the books that you want.
When this situation came up this week, I looked at books that are scheduled to come out in the next four months that could create the same type of problem. Â Bottom line – if you want to be on the cutting edge – and one of the shops that is creating the trends – not reacting to them, you need to order these books now! Â All of these books are by proven authors who have a following so they are guaranteed sales – period!

That is just in time to arrive with the new Christmas fabrics for NEXT year – and I don’t even have my tree up for THIS year up.  But, Lynda is a facebook friend – and announced today that her house is ALL decorated.  I’m jealous!
