Tricks with the Strip and Double Strip Rulers are a Hit!
Nov 9th, 2009 by Penny Haren
ACarolyn Griffin is a Checker sales rep who definitely knows our products. Â She also has her own pattern line, Far Flung Quilts, and just produced her first notion – a five inch square that makes short work of cutting your own charm squares, The Charm Wizard.
When one of her stores was having trouble selling bundles of 1 1/2″ strips, Carolyn took it as a challenge to create a market for these fabrics! Â And – wow!!!! Â You will love it!

Â
Â
I got so excited I sewed two of these strips together to make a 2 1/2″ strip.
Then, she cut these strip sets with the Creative Grids strip rulers to make complicated designs quickly and easily. Â In the case of this 60 degree strip ruler (Item #CGRSR60), every time you move the ruler along this pieced 2 1/2″ strip, you will cut 7 – 60 degree triangles with absolutely no waste of the fabric.
The top, left picture is an example of the completed hexagon created when cutting and sewing the triangles from a single 2 1/2″ strip. Â The bottom picture is an example of it when two – 1 1/2″ strips are sewn together before cutting. Â The block on the right is an example of what happens when you sew two – 2 1/2″ strips together and use the 60 degree double strip rulers (Item #CGRDBS60) that will be shipped in the next couple of weeks!
How fun is that! Â And, when you sew two 1 1/2″ strips to a 2 1/2″ strip and use the double strip ruler – you get a hexagon with three stripes per triangle. Â If you sew FOUR 1 1/2″ strips together – and then use the double strip ruler, you will get four stripes per triangle! Â I can’t wait to play with these to see what happens when I sew combinations of these cuts! Â The possibilities are endless – but I will keep you posted!

The Trapezoid Strip ruler was the greatest surprise! Â This “mini” version is fast and accurate – and looks like you spent hours cutting and piecing! Â I will make the next one scrappy – but this will give you an idea of what the finished project would look like when you sew these trapezoids into a braid.
