The Row by Row Experience and Creative Grids

I love this idea – it is simply brilliant!  States – and even parts of Canada – are participating in this new craze.  Forget post cards – now quilters can collect row patterns at quilt shops as they travel.  What a memory!
There is still time to become a participating shop.  Visit:  http://www.rowbyrowexperience.com/
If a shop creates their row using one of the suggested Creative Grids rulers, that shop is entered into a separate contest and is eligible for additional prizes!  This is a win/win/win for everyone.
I can’t say it any better than the experts:

How about this… a shop hop type event with no fees, no passports and all summer to play? Simply visit any of the participating shops and receive a free pattern for a row in a quilt. Combine your rows in any way to create a unique quilt that represents the fun you had traveling throughout the summer. Travel with friends, discover new quilt shops and have fun collecting rows!Prizes, collectibles and more fun!Create a quilt using at least 8 different rows and be the first to bring it into a participating shop to win a stack of 25 fat quarters (6-1/4 yards of fabric!). Use that shop’s row in your quilt and win a bonus prize!Exclusive Fabric Plates by Zebra Patterns will be available in shops around the country. Each one is unique! Collect a bunch to create fun projects, sewing studio wall art or even a fun backing for your quilt. Each area has their own Facebook page. Like the page from the areas you visit to see pics of the rows, shop displays, winning quilts and fabric plate projects.
Row by Row began in 2011 with 20 quilt shops across New York State. In 2012 the event grew to include 62 participating shops. Pennsylvania came on board in 2013 for a total of 138 shops throughout the two states. In 2014 the event is moving across the country. Over 20 states are participating and planning fun for quilters nationwide. Athough the quilt shops are organized by state, quilters have no borders. Travel, shop, collect patterns and add rows to your quilt from any area.
Checker offers the Timeless Treasures fabric that will help to coordinate the colors in the rows.
Everyone participating will want to include at least one strip from the signature fabric:
sew a season
See the complete collection:
The fabrics will be arriving next month so shops need to design their rows now and order fabrics for kits, etc. accordingly….

Snuggle Up in Extra Wide Cuddle

I absolutely LOVE Cuddle and the luxurious feel that it gives to my quilts.  What is not to love????  It has a nap that feels like velvet and wears beautifully.  And, if you are learning to machine quilt, it hides all of those rookie mistakes!

They have just introduced a 90″ wide version in eight of their top selling colors!  At around $20 a yard, it is cheaper than piecing a back with standard 40″ wide cottons!  I’m hooked!

These are due in next month – but can be pre-ordered now.  Just click on the blue item number to take you directly to our website!

If you are using a longarm machine, roll the selvedge ends.  There is no stretch parallel to the selvedge so the backing won’t be distorted when clamping.

If you are using a domestic machine, use a basting spray.

No matter how you quilt it, I prefer using a cotton batting.  In fact, I have talked to several machine quilters who will not quilt it without a batting so be sure to ask!

These fabrics would be a great showcase product for upcoming events!  Order now to be the first to have it available – you may want to order multiples since it comes on 10 yard bolts!

Fat Quarters as Backings – a Chart

It is that time of year….many of us were snowed in a LOT this winter and had a chance to finish a lot of UFO’s.  And now, all of those UFO’s need quilted.

Why not offer your customers an alternative to traditional backings?  Fat quarters!  Sometimes piecing a back from fat quarters and actually save them money – and is a great opportunity to add interest to their quilt.  An added bonus?  They use up their stash!  Don’t you love guilt free sewing???

Have a fat quarter sale for those who don’t have a stash – or need to add some coordinates to get to the size they need.

These measurements assume that the fat quarters are squared up to 17″ x 19″ before sewing.  Not all fat quarters are cut accurately – and some people wash their fabrics – so these measurements reflect that.  Then, they are sewn with a 1/4″ seam….

2 x 2 (4 Fat Quarters)
33 1/2″ x 37 1/2″

3 x 3 (9 Fat Quarters)
50″ x 56″

4 x 4 (16 Fat Quarters)
66 1/2″ x 74 1/2″

4 x 5 (20 Fat Quarters)
66 1/2″ x 93″

5 x 5 (25 Fat Quarters)
83″ x 93″

5 x 6 (30 Fat Quarters)
83″ x 111 1/2″

6 x 6 (36 Fat Quarters)
99 1/2″ x 111 1/2″

What a great way to reduce your stash!  Be sure to have a lot of batting on hand.  Now that they have the tops and backing ready – machine quilting is next!
