A Cozy Quilted Christmas by Kim Schaefer

                                                      A Cozy Quilted Christmas
                                                              Item #10514
                                                              Retail $28.95

This is the definitive Christmas book this season!  I loved everything in it – and then realized that the author and designer was the creative genius behind Little Country Quilts which debuted in 1996.  But, there is nothing “little” about this book.  It is chock full of designs – 90 to be exact, and 17 different projects.

The mix is wonderful – full size quilts, wall hangings, mini tree skirts, coasters….You can pick out a gift for everyone on your list!  There are traditional quilts mixed with a touch of funky!  One of my favorites has a contemporary center with a border of presents – tied with big appliqued bows!

And, for the men in your life, she has designed a series of Santas playing their favorite sports.  Kim appliqued them on homespun towels, but I think I am going to frame the football version and personalize it  for my favorite coach!

Then there is the angel wall hanging that includes nine different girls – and some how she managed to evoke each one with its own personality.  You will recognize all of your friends here – another opportunity for a framed quilt project!  That is what I love about this book.  You can switch appliques and designs so the actual number of projects is endless!

Her choice of color is great too.  She added some “spunk” to the “funk” and created a look that will fit in anyone’s home.  Whether you love country or contemporary, you’ll find something you love!

And, when the season is over, check out her other book – Flowering Quilts – just in time to satisfy that Spring Fever!

The Gypsy Gripper

I am so impressed with this product that I didn’t want to leave out anything so I got this information straight from the manufacturer’s website.  But, I can’t stand to not throw in my two cents worth!

I love new products that also meet the needs of our older quilters.  As many of my customers age, they have trouble rotary cutting because they can’t maintain enough pressure on the ruler.  This product provides the perfect solution – and is great for everyone, including children.  In the manufacturer’s own words…..

Sometimes it can be a real challenge to hold your plastic ruler in just the right spot while cutting fabric.  And if you happen to slip with the blade, you could end up cutting yourself.  Ouch! That’s gonna leave a mark!  But now, there is a great new way to hold your rulers in place, and it makes using them easier and safer than ever before – it’s The Gypsy Gripper. And it’s a must-have tool for quilting.

The Gypsy Gripper has a comfortable grip handle, and two large round suction cups with handy lock & release levers.  Just press the suction cups to any plastic or metal ruler with a smooth surface, then flip the levers to lock The Gypsy Gripper in place.  Now you can move the ruler quickly, and easily hold it on the exact position with gentle downward pressure.  Your ruler hand will be up and away from the fabric, and out of harm’s way if you slip with the cutter.  When you need to switch to another ruler, just flip the locking levers to release The Gypsy Gripper.

The Gyspy Gripper ™ - double ended use (click to enlarge)    Both ends attached to a long ruler.

The Gypsy Gripper weighs just under eight ounces, so moving it around won’t wear you down.  The overall size is about 3-3/4″ wide by 11-1/2″ long by 3-1/4″ high (sitting on its cups).  Durable plastic body is water-proof and washable, so it will look good and work well for years of use.

The Gyspy Gripper ™ - single ended use (click to enlarge)    One end attached to a triangle ruler.

The Gypsy Gripper’s  suction cups will work with smooth surface rulers that are at least 4″ wide, including most rectangle, square, or triangle shapes (with no slots or holes in the areas that will be covered by the suction cups).  Use it with just one end attached on square or triangle rulers and it still grips perfectly, you can let the other end rest on the table while you hold in place and cut.  Finger guides in the sculptured handle help make The Gypsy Gripper easy to position and comfortable to hold, even during the longest cutting sessions.  A dream come true!

You will be truly stunned by the dramatic difference The Gypsy Gripper makes when using your rulers to cut fabric, and you really will wonder how you ever got along without it.  Get a grip and rule your rulers!  Order today to get The Gypsy Gripper Item #TGQ002!

This is not just the name of a new company – it is a philosophy! Cindy Hutchinson describes herself as a grandma with two-toned hair and red fingernails who happens to live in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.  She is the queen of flash and came out with an amazing product!  Her enthusiasm just pulls you right in!

She has designed a series of stencils.  The “holes” are placed perfectly so you can glue crystals in place and decorate anything you can get your hands on!  The stencils can be used on paper, fabric, purses, shoes, and wood.  She uses the new Professional Touch Crystal Applicator which heats the adhesive-backed crystal to just the right temperature so it will adhere to your finished project.

Cindy was kind enough to join us at the Checker Open House and brought some of her jeans that she has washed a hundred times.  The crystal design looked brand new.  I thought they might start falling off – or wearing off – when washed and worn a lot – not so.  She made me into a true believer!

Every Girl Scout leader, grandmother, mother, 4-H leader, and teacher should be required to include this in their project schedule.  Cindy says that many of the dance troupes that visit their area stop in and design their own T-Shirts to wear during the events.  And, when you are done with your shirts, move on to your shoes and purse!

Scrapbookers can use it too.  Personalized stationary would be great.  You can do a design in a matter of minutes and since the holes in the stencils are equally spaced, you get perfect results every time!  If you have any crystals left, you can glue them to ribbons and packages to make your gifts extra special!  I’m hoping to entice my daughter into wrapping everything this Christmas – how could she resist when Cindy has made it so much fun?

Cindy uses the 3mm size the most but the 2mm and 4mm sizes will work in the stencils too!  Check out all of the colors and sizes by going to “Crafts” and clicking on “crystals” at  They come in unlimited colors so let your creativity flow!

She showed us how you can take a heart from one stencil and a star from another to create your own unique design.   The only problem you’ll have is picking out the stencils you want – I couldn’t just choose one!  See our selection by typing in Southern Attitude for the vendor at

This is a fun project for anyone that wants a make-it take-it project too.  In fifteen minutes, you can finish a project – what’s not to love?

The fascination with 5″ squares really began in 2002 when Pat Speth and Charlene Thode wrote Nickel Quilts!  Their book includes 20 scrap quilts that incorporate “charm squares” into their designs.  I love this book – and the sequel by Pat Speth called More Nickel Quilts – which includes 20 more.

Many of these quilt designs also include pieced borders that are perfect complements to the originals.  And, what a great way to use up your stash!  But, if your stash is quickly diminished after you pick out the first five or ten quilts you see, the books include great ideas for exchanges!

Supplement your stash of squares by sponsoring a swap with your quilting group or guild.  If everyone participates, you will have enough squares in no time to achieve that scrappy look you love.  Change the colors or style each month  – and a new guild program is born…  Reproduction fabrics are always popular – but don’t forget that background fabrics are also needed.

They suggest that you trade doubles of each fabric.  The reason is simple – if you cut 5″ strips from selvage to selvage – and cut these strips on the fold, you can sub cut each strip into 4 sets of two – 5″ squares, quickly and easily.

Did you know you could cut 12 – 5″ squares out of a fat quarter AND have a 2 1/2″ x 20″ strip leftover for a scrappy binding?  What could be easier than that?  And Lord knows we ALL have a boatload of fat quarters that were too pretty to pass up – but have been sitting there way too long!  Host your own cutting party and use them up!

Two of our local guilds are hosting auctions next month.  What a great contribution for an auction item!  Have your friendship group donate five inch squares and put them in a basket with the book – instant quilt kit from donated fabric!

So join the fun – at a fraction of the cost of the pre-packaged versions.  And reap the added benefit of cutting up your stash into usable segments.  The quilts in these books are truly well done.  The color and proportion of design are great.  Or use one of the border designs to add the perfect touch to an already completed quilt.

No more stash – no more guilt!  That simple!

Japanese Temari Balls

Japanese Temari
Item #BP12-5
Retail $24.95

A soon to be released book may be the answer for some friends and family on your Christmas gift list.  These Temari Balls are truly works of art and remind me of the huck weaving I learned to do in home ec!  Beautiful threads are wrapped around styrofoam balls – using a doll needle (Item #12-D5) – to create intricate patterns and designs.

Many of the samples used beautiful pearl cottons and metallic threads – and the instructions are so clearly written, that it is possible for even a beginner to be successful.  What a great way to use up all of those decorative threads leftover from other projects!

These balls are so beautiful that they deserve to be displayed individually on candlesticks as the centerpiece of any holiday table.  But, wouldn’t it be lovely to then offer them to your guests as a momento of the evening?  An entire Christmas tree decorated with these balls would be a family heirloom!

My favorites were made with fabrics and cording.  They were simpler to accomplish and could be finished quickly – but were still absolutely beautiful.  They even fussy cut some of the fabrics – and even did some on egg shaped styrofoam balls for Easter!  This is the perfect gift – you can give your friends and family a different ornament every year to add to their collection.  You wouldn’t have to come up with a new idea year after year!

Checker carries 2″ (Item #010041); 3″ (Item #01006); and 4″ (Item #01007) styrofoam balls.  Since the book explains how to divide these balls into segments to create each specific design, you can make them as small – or as large – as you want.  The only limitation is your own imagination!

We had a trunk show of this book on display in the advanced copy library at the Checker Open House.  Many of us were intimidated by the thread version – but fell in love with the fabric versions.  What a great make it-take it class for this fall!  And, after everyone learns how to segment the balls for the designs, transitioning to threads would be a piece of cake.

Start with a fabric class and transition to a thread class.  You could even offer a different class each month – featuring a different design – so your customers could start their own collections – or get a jump on gifts.  And, after Christmas, start a collection – and class – for Easter Eggs.

We also have friends who like to do a project with family when they get together for the holidays.  This would be perfect – no sewing machines required!  All you need is doll needles, decorative threads, and styrofoam balls – start organizing the kits today.  You could actually have something to do during those football games…….

What’s New

Side Winder – A New Notion for Every Gadget Lover

Side Winder
Item #88175
Retail $29.99

What’s not to love.  This thing winds any bobbin with a round center hole!  you can plug it into the wall or run it on two AA batteries.  You don’t even have to unthread your machine!

The machine quilters and embroiderers will love it.  They can wind multiple bobbins in seconds.  This is one luxury that no quilter can do without.  The long armers have been building their own for awhile now – but, thanks to the Wright Company there is now one available to those of us who are technically challenged.

The side winder – you’ve got to love the name – isn’t going to be released until the middle of October.  But if the advance hype on this product is any indication, if you don’t order one now, you will be in a back order situation!  So ask your favorite quilt shop to order it today!
